Just like the title states, we explore The World of All Souls together in this bonus episode of Daemons Discuss!

This episode is best described as "Daemons unplugged," because we opted out of our usual production format. Instead, we leaned into a more straight-forward conversation containing our thoughts on the material contained in this official guide to the All Souls Trilogy.

WARNING! There are spoilers! We discuss our impressions of The World of All Souls (TWOAS). If you have not read TWOAS, and don't want to know about it yet, skip this episode. As this is a bonus edition, no other information on other items/current events in the universe or fandom is discussed in this recording. If you don't care either way, enjoy! *Please note - we will freely refer to the information in TWOAS in our future discussions after this episode. Our self-imposed moratorium on open discussion with this particular book will be over as of the 20th of June, 2018.

Beginnings, endings -- change. Boy, do we get a dose of all three throughout these two chapters! We watch Diana Bishop and Matthew Clairmont take their first steps as an "official" husband and wife team. We spend some quality moments with Philippe de Clermont before we bid him farewell. Then we are launched to present-day Sept-Tours in the company of Sarah Bishop, Emily Mather and Ysabeau de Clermont by an anomaly -- Philippe's note to Ysabeau. It did the reader good, because it provided us some comfort by informing Ysabeau that he had just seen Matthew and Diana safely off. Further on, the same note helps Ysabeau begin to end her period of greiving. Ysabeau rounds up today's journey by serenading us as we proceed on to London, The Blackfriers in future chapters, yet we remain forever changed by this particular trip to Sept-Tours.

In all seriousness, this is the one with family planning, the one with the temple, the one with the feasts, the one with La Robe, the one with financial independence, the one with wedding, and the one where Matthew and Diana become one. • Our episode titles are a loving tribute to the show "Friends" just 'cause we love Friends and - let's face it - it's easier! Here's how one of the show creators explains their reasoning:

Jeff Greenstein: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"

Here it is folks, the moment we've been waiting for! Finally, the chance to actually title an episode this, after some off-handed remarks in another episode! In all seriousness, this is the one with family planning, the one with the temple, the one with the feasts, the one with La Robe, the one with financial independence, the one with wedding, and the one where Matthew and Diana become one. The "D" is for Daemons, you dirty ditch dwellers! 😜

Well, the title tells the story. Wordplay: Matthew Clairmont and Philippe de Clermont have words to throw at each other! Sharp and pointed like the swords they pick up later, we learn how they interact in conflict. Swordplay: We watch how the words are interchangeable with daggers and swords in the hay barn. Bloodplay: We find out for the first time in this series that Matthew has an affliction -- blood rage. Diana Bishop is also made Philippe's blood-sworn daughter. What does this mean? It means she will not be alone in the world when she is confronted by enemies, even if they come in the form of a witch named André Champier.

Another jam-packed episode! Take it in shifts, split it on your commute between home and work, zone out during the extra 20 minutes ... or just listen to the whole thing in one caffeine-fueled binge session #nojudgement. 😝

Matthew Clairmont is absolutely puny according to Philippe de Clermont. He's not been taking care of himself properly, and needs excercise! While the Philippe takes care of his puny son, Diana Bishop's tasks are decidedly NOT puny. She needs to learn how to manage a staff, the household, her uncertainty, HER LIFE! We begin with a brooding moody vampire in the antichambers, and end with a facination with the whole gambit our witch is being set up for. She's playing for keeps, and Philippe is making sure of it!

Later in the episode we review the unedited proof sampler of The World of All Souls (no spoilers). Delight ensues! Happy listening!

SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read The All Souls Trilogy, including A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, and The Book of Life. If you haven't, and you don't mind, we certainly don't mind! 😊 Let's do this. *Note - this podcast is labeled 'explicit'

Off to Sept-Tours we go! 1590's style! As we travel with Matthew Clairmont and Diana Bishop, we make a few stops. With each step closer to Philippe de Clermont, we not only wonder about him, but we start to really think about who Matthew de Clermont is! Diana has a long road of discovery ahead of her.

How does this play in the big picture?! Our questions breed more questions, and in the end we walk away still scratching our heads a little, thoroughly disgusted with Daniel, perplexed (but thrilled) about our international community, eagerly anticipating the TV show, and royally pissed off at Jerry👻. Good times!😆

Let's talk about the secrets and surprises we receive in these chapters, shall we?! As part of her elucidation lessons directed by George Chapman, Diana is reading the Faerie Queene (by Edmund Spenser). The boys are discussing philosophy, playing dice, arguing about astronomy and mathematics when all of a sudden, BAM! Enter Gallowglass and his pal Hancock. They've got some news; a lot of it, actually! It turns out that Widow Beaton's visit didn't end easily as Matthew thought it would. Diana is about to be interrogated for performing witchcraft by some of the locals. She also finds out she's married to a spy and the current de Clermont on the congregation! And if all that wasn't enough . . . Philippe de Clermont thinks his son Matthew is dead. Oy. Listen in as we sort through this web of intrigue!

Matthew Clairmont and Diana Bishop get around to acknowledging the need for some witchy guidance. The intent: to return back to the present time armed with Diana's new magic, ward off the Congregation, and finally discover the secrets of Ashmole 782.

Matthew's friends (The School of Night), offer help by coming up with elaborate stories to explain away her differences. Françoise tries to come to Diana's aid by calling for some gloves and shoes to be made. Matthew summons the Widow Beaton to the house as a witch teacher for Diana. The insane/hilarious fun of all of these interactions is what is covered in this episode!

Later on, Hamish completes the conventicle, and with his leadership, the Bishop-Clairmont gang lay out a road map for their collective futures. From Sarah's famous scrambled eggs to quiet vows taken in a (mostly) empty house, this episode touches all of the events between. Together we lifted our feet . . .

Settled into the Bishop house, Matthew Clairmont and Diana Bishop are faced with many problems: avoiding the wrath of the congregation, making sense of Diana's magical limitations, and the figuring out the meaning of the wayward page from Ashmole 782 that the house delivered to them in chapter 34.

We soon realize that the pairing of Diana Bishop and Matthew Clairmont may not just be fate -- it could be necessary for species survival! In the midst of this discussion, the Daemons attempt to navigate through a chapter that has always been a bit of an enigma for them; they dip their toes in the murky waters of geneology (with some guidance from the fandom's favorite real-life vampire scientist -- Dr. Shelli Carter -- who joins in as a fourth for the entire chapter block).

We also get a taste of the 'war' Miriam speaks of -- ENTER JULIETTE! After sampling what thier common enemies have in store for them, Matthew and Diana plot an alternate course for their future.

Enter Baldwin Montclair! Valerie patiently indulges Angela and Jean (truthfully, she gleefully eggs them on -- that might explain the episode length!) while they spend time with their favorite de Clermont. This has been named 'The One With the Bite,' because of Baldwin's declaration to Matthew: "You bit me!" In this episode, we also head to America (Madison, NY), and meet Sarah Bishop and Emily Mather (and Tabitha. And the House).

This is our last recording in the age of innocence! It was produced 'BEFORE CASTING" aka "BC". When we found out that casting choices for A Discovery of Witches TV would be revealed, we decided to go on and record this episode as planned to keep our regular schedule going. BUT, we did record a reaction! Make sure you check out our Special Edition episode for our reaction to the casting news on delivered on August 22nd, 2017 (hint - #MatthewSquared). Produced on the fly, so the audio is a bit dodgier than we'd like, but we figured it would be forgiven for this sort of thing! Listen/view show notes here: go.DaemonsDiscuss.com/SE04

Welp! Our Longest. Episode. EVER! Eek 😳! We couldn't stay contained! Longer commute? Perfect for you -- you are covered both ways! Otherwise, pause it when you've had enough, and save the rest for later! Or binge your way through the whole episode all at once. #NoJudgement

Matthew Clairmont and Diana Bishop have reached a new height in their relationship! Great, right? Well ... Ysabeau is skeptical, Matthew is tentative, and Domenico really has something to say about it, or more correctly, the CONGREGATION does!

✮ What is the Congregation? We learn about the mysterious panel of nine in these chapters, and it appears it was a secret only to Diana! There so are many more secrets for Diana (and the reader) to uncover. It seems we all have a lot to learn about vampires -- names, hunting rituals, pack rules, family origins, and secret vampire organizations, to list a few!

✮ From the vampire greeting her with a morning breakfast tray one day, to a late night declaration of love on another, we travel a bit further on the bumpy road to Bishop-Clairmont.

We examine Matthew's secrets, habits, his friends back then, and his family. We look at Diana's methods of assimilation, her insecurities, and her eventual triumph. Join us as we peek at their futures, planted squarely in the past! As of late, a relatively short episode, clocking in at just over 48 minutes. 😝

Originally this was to be called "The One With the Dates," but hey. We're Daemons. We change our minds sometimes. We talk about start of the whirlwind courtship that eventually — in about +/- 70 chapters — culminates into the Bishop-Clairmont scion. Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves, though! This is the beginning of a new era, so we will take our time to savor the moments (Matthew-style, even though he was annoying us with his teasing!) From snowflakes to Sept-Tours, this is the episode containing the stuff in between.

<![CDATA[The One With the Moments]]> Thu, 09 Mar 2017 01:30:54 GMT 53:46 yes full 12 Before we get into chapter discussions (now that we've done many of the primer subjects relating to this trilogy), we wanted to reflect on some of the moments throughout the Trilogy that talked to us, and how we related to them in our own lives. There were quite a few moments, but we managed to narrow them down to snapshot selections to effectively discuss them. If you'd ask us tomorrow, we may come up with something totally different! A big thank you goes to our Discussers, who really delivered on sharing their moments with us.

<![CDATA[The One With the Experiments]]> Wed, 08 Feb 2017 07:37:19 GMT 48:48 yes full 10 The dreaded (well, we dreaded it!) episode on alchemy! What an intimidating topic! We do a very (very, very, very) basic overview on alchemy in this episode. We did it with the help of a beginner’s book on alchemy and a bunch of Google searches for different sources. The end result? Surprise! You’ve been doing alchemy in one form of or another all of your life. The end. Next episode! Just kidding, but if you are interested in the subject and were too intimidated to tackle it, you at least have a few starting points and factoids. Oh, and stain removal tips! Enjoy!

Without further ado, we present this totally unscientific analysis of different characters of this series. Included are the Meyers-Briggs personality types of (based on our own interpretations & not in order): Hamish, Stephen, Ysabeau, Philippe, Benjamin, Baldwin, Matthew, Diana, Miriam and finally Marcus -- who we took the test for while recording. Gallowglass, Fernando and Kit were done afterwards, and we've included those results in the show notes below.

This is us just discussing our general wish list when it comes to the television production of A Discovery of Witches. We have been anticipating this for a very long time, and this discussion has taken place dozens of times, in lots of places over the years! Since we have the means this time, we recorded it! We suggest you pair your listening session with your favorite wine (or fermented beverage of choice) - you may relate to our ramblings a bit better! Enjoy the show! :)

<![CDATA[The One with the Witches]]> Tue, 08 Nov 2016 15:04:20 GMT 41:41 yes full 4 Time to talk about Diana's people! The Witches! In A Discovery of Witches, witches either fell into the catagory spell-casters, or elemental witches. Turns out there were more types of witches (weavers!), as there are many types in the 'realm' we live in. We discuss the pagan practices that Deborah Harkness may have drawn from when she imagined the All Souls Trilogy. What is myth and what is fact when it comes to neo-pagan belief systems? Let's discuss!
